For Display Only
2016 Collaboration performance with Mari Clark-Nagaoka
Wood, tyvek, screen print, embroidery
"For Display Only" was a project to speak of the stories of the marginalized femmes of color in our society. Quilts hold the stories and histories, this quilt was screen printed with overlayed images of Mari to speak to the fetishization of Asian femmes specifically. In the tradition of sewing circles, Mari and Monyee sat together embroidering and traded experiences of fetishization, abuse, and discrimination they have experienced. The performance was opened up to the public to help teach others to learn how to embroider while also sharing their personal stories.
